I’m very pleased to announce the rebirth of the UMatter2Us project. After three years of struggling to build the entire system from scratch with Ruby on Rails, we finally decided to make the switch to WordPress and start over. Here are a few of the benefits this new direction offers:
The WordPress Core
WordPress provides a solid, secure, and responsive platform for development which already includes a vast number of robust features such as user management, and a fantastic WYSIWYG editor that will allow users to create web content without a background in HTML coding.
Installation of UMatter2Us was challenging, to say the least, under the old RoR implementation. This was going to be a barrier to widespread adoption as instructors who wanted to use the system would need to set up their own server. Delivering UMatter2Us as a plugin will allow any WordPress user to nearly instantly convert their site into a full-featured learning management system.
As a registered WordPress plugin, users will be able to upgrade their installations of UMatter2Us easily from within the WordPress admin interface.
I’d like to acknowledge the efforts of two of my early collaborators on this project, Tommy Fadoul and Thomas Haney. With their help a great deal of progress was made on the architecture and conceptual framework for the system.
Stay tuned for upcoming releases!
